Roman Polanski, at least, has avoided uttering equally barbaric soundbites since his confession to drugging and sodomizing a minor, though I imagine if he were in the States — and incarcerated — we’d hear more from the diminutive pederast-piggy. (“Her lips said ‘Non,’ but her quaalude-clouded eyes said ‘oui, oui, oui!’ all the way home.”) Nevertheless, his filmic prolificacy speaks volumes and I don’t like what I’m hearing/seeing: PIRATES. FRANTIC. BITTER MOON. THE NINTH GATE. (He gets a pass for THE PIANIST, although making a Holocaust film practically guarantees one will receive Hollywood’s, um, gold star, no?)

Now, you can get a glimpse of Polanski’s latest, THE GHOST WRITER, thanks to the good folks at iTunes (and others, I’m sure). This is the project that allowed the deviant movie-maker to bypass prison time in favor of house arrest and somehow escape extradition once again. I urge you to watch the trailer, then ask yourself if it’s worth it. Worth what? Worth the tens of millions spent upon a genre production in service of the creative ego of a convicted statutory rapist. What price Art? Better yet, what price Justice? Have we bartered one for the other?

Question what you see. Consider what you don’t. Draw your own conclusions.

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts.  Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red’’ to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

A single mom and her slacker sister find an unexpected way to turn their lives around in the off-beat dramatic comedy SUNSHINE CLEANING. Set in the insular world of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, TWO LOVERS is a classic romantic drama, with Joaquin Phoenix giving a raw and vulnerable performance as Leonard, a charismatic but troubled young man who moves back into his childhood home following a recent heartbreak. While recovering under the watchful eye of his parents (Isabella Rossellini and Moni Monoshov), Leonard meets two women in quick succession: Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow), a mysterious and beautiful neighbor who is exotic and out-of-place in Leonard’s staid world, and Sandra, the lovely and caring daughter of a businessman who is buying out his family’s dry-cleaning business.

Leonard becomes deeply infatuated by Michelle, who seems poised to fall for him, but is having a self-destructive affair with a married man. At the same time, mounting pressure from his family pushes him towards committing to Sandra. Leonard is forced to make an impossible decision – between the impetuousness of desire and the comfort of love – or risk falling back into the darkness that nearly killed him.

Don’t miss February’s Exposed: Inside Film featuring the new science-fiction/action adventure film OUTLANDER, followed by an in-depth conversation with writer/director Howard McCain. In OUTLANDER, it’s 509 AD, and a mysterious space ship crashes into majestic Fjords of ancient Norway. From the wreckage of this craft emerge two bitter enemies: an unstoppable, terrifying creature known as The Moorwen, and a man from another world, Kainan. As the deadly creature proceeds to lay waste to the Viking world, Kainan is forced to join forces with them in order to kill the Moorwen before it destroy them all.

Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report will host the evening and conduct the interview with Mr. McCain following the screening.

Following in the footsteps of his childhood filmmaking heroes James Cameron, The Wachowski Brothers and Ridley Scott, Howard McCain is making his big-budget directing debut with OUTLANDER. Staring Jim Caviezel, John Hurt and Ron Pearlman, the film is being distributed by the Weinstein Company and scheduled for release in early 2009. A graduate of New York University, Howard’s short films TRUMAN and LOS POLLOS won best short film at the Sundance Film Festival and at the Student Emmy Awards. Howard has directed television movies for Showtime, HBO, and the Disney Channel. As a writer, he and his partner Dirk Blackman wrote UNDERWORLD 3, and recently sold the action/adventure pitch, AMAZON. The writing team has also been hired by Lion’s Gate to write the script for the new CONAN reboot.
