Last night, The Warren Report — in association with EMP/SFM — presented OUTLANDER as part of the ongoing EXPOSED: Inside Film series. It was really the only chance for most folks to see it on the big screen as The Weinstein Company had released the sci-fi epic for one week on about 200 screens nationwide; a disrespectful and essentially un-marketed fulfillment of a contractual obligation. Only problem: audiences truly want to see OUTLANDER… even if they can’t. Quickly, it became the #1 most pirated title on BitTorrent, a good indication of a passionate fan base. Please recognize this is not an indication of the public’s declining moral standards because they downloaded OUTLANDER illegally, rather a reminder of insatiable fanboy (and fangal) lust. OUTLANDER‘s cool. Heck, who doesn’t want to see vikings clash with aliens!?! Last night, a portion of the audience came in costume donning horns and antennae. No one asked them to, they were simply stoked to see the interstellar showdown promising a Morwen in lieu of the originally intended Beowulf. Expectations were met. Movie-lovers hooted, howled and hoorayed as much blood was spilled, Sophia Myles kicked ass and Jim Caviezel — tired of turning the other cheek perhaps? — went maniacally medieval on the poor bio-luminescent space-dragon.

Next week, The Warren Report will post video highlights from my extended, post-show interview with filmmaker Howard McCain, but for those of you who either saw OUTLANDER and want to share it with others or are just pissed the film was not granted a reasonable theatrical run, I urge you to CALL or write to The Weinstein Company and protest their short-sightedness. Mr. McCain is a talented screenwriter and director, who apparently does not put country first, preferring the mayhem wreaked by… vampires battling werewolves (UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS); Vikings fending off aliens (OUTLANDER), and, as of today, soldiers desperately trying to kill the undead!  He and partner, Dirk Blackman, have just signed on to adapt ZMD: ZOMBIES OF MASS DESTRUCTION, the popular Red 5 comic. (McCain has also been announced as the scriptor for Brett Ratner‘s new take on CONAN… the Barbarian, that is, not the Leno surrogate.)

On February 17th, I’ll host Mr. McCain for a special screening of OUTLANDER, which he also directed, at EMP as part of our collaborative EXPOSED: Inside Film series. The most unique comeback story of the year.  Dennis Lambert was one of the most successful and diverse songwriter/producers of the ‘70s and ‘80s, with hits like “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)”, “Rhinestone Cowboy”, “Don’t Pull Your Love”, “Baby Come Back” and “Nightshift”.  He had chart-toppers in almost every genre of music — at one point four of his songs were simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a feat previously accomplished only by The Beatles.  That was then.  Today, he’s a 60-year-old family man selling real estate in Florida. But it turns out his obscure 1972 solo album is huge… in the Philippines. A Filipino concert promoter has been begging Dennis to come tour for decades, and in 2007 he finally agreed.  OF ALL THE THINGS is a hilarious and touching pop/rock/country/R&B documentary that follows Dennis on his whirlwind tour as he rediscovers his passion for music — a two-week adventure that takes him from the comforts of Boca Raton to a sold-out show at Manila’s famous Araneta Coliseum for thousands of fans he never knew he had. Some lives deserve an encore.
