A leap of faith?

Folks who feel like killing themselves are going to have to find a different landmark to leap from. The Washington State Transportation Department has finally installed a 9-foot suicide prevention fence on the Aurora Bridge.

The construction of this view-obscuring, life-saving budget-drainer inspired one of my favorite episodes of The High Bar on which I match wits with The Stranger‘s Brendan Kiley, debating the relative merits of the project’s costs versus the good done. (Watch it on Vimeo or YouTube.)

Since the show, the state has announced it will begin work on “strengthen[ing] bridge support columns, girders and trusses” to the tune of 9.3 million dollars. Um, in this economy, shouldn’t that have been done first as the structural integrity of the bridge will likely save more lives than the fence?

What do YOU think?
