Far be it for me to distinguish between graffiti and Art; I’ll leave such bourgeois nit-picking to the critics and, worse, the collectors. Indeed the only reason I mention it is because it is a strong undercurrent of the Oscar-nominated documentary, Exit Through The Gift Shop, an attempted portrait of the street artist Banksy as hijacked by him and the antics of an obsessive-compulsive French videographer.
However, the art I do know or, at least, feel confident opining about is comedy and this film provides a handful of gems that will outlive the screen-prints of Mr. Brainwash. Banksy’s timing and dry delivery are masterful, particularly when critiquing another’s filmmaking or confessing he’s abandoned his former habit of encouraging everyone to create Art: “I don’t do that so much anymore.” Brilliant. Put that in the Louvre.
I am a late-comer to the Banksy party, only becoming aware of him with the release of this movie and his hilariously subversive one-shot opening for The Simpsons. Suffice it to say, I am a fan, a convert. I am thankful for Banksy and his wit.
