On the tv series Millennium, detective Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) solved grisly murders by perceiving the awful acts through the eyes of the killers. He may or may not have been “psychic,” regardless, cops on screens big and small, have mirrored his approach, championing the notion that the best way to catch a criminal is by seeing the world from the perpetrator’s perspective.
Perhaps we’d be wise to take a similar tack in confronting child abuse. In a recent interview with Jeannie Yandel for KUOW Presents, I highlight three movies that allow us to do just that. If we are to combat child abuse, maybe it best if we understood its root causes and consider the possibility that it is not an isolated consequence of Evil but rather a frightening potential within most of us… if it is ignored rather than acknowledged.
Please listen to the interview, watch the movies (TOWELHEAD, THE WOODSMAN
, DELIVER US FROM EVIL
) and suggest your own solutions. Or, look into organizations such as Children’s Trust Foundation and all they are doing to stem the rising tide of child neglect and abuse.
