Words & Wine: Intimate Evenings with Interesting People continues, as we welcome New Yorker writer David Grann for a conversation about his NYT bestselling book The Lost City of Z and his new book The Devil and Sherlock Holmes
: Tales of Murder, Madness and Obsession.
Grann has a fascination with eccentric true life characters and the talent to tell their stories in gripping, powerful detail, his pieces pivot around the pull of obsession and the kind of people that fall into its grasp.Whether it be the story of Percy Fawcett, a 19th century explorer who vanished in the Amazon or a Sherlock Holmes scholar who descends into violence and madness, Grann’s unforgettable profiles display the power and perversity of the human spirit.

“Outstanding, a powerful narrative, stiff lipped and Victorian at the center, trippy at the edges, as if one of those stern men of Conrad had found himself trapped in a novel by Garcia Marquez. A kind of magical nonfiction, terrifically entertaining.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times
For all those who love the Shackleton story, the tales of the Everest climbers or the obsessive scientist in The Orchid Thief, don’t miss meeting and having a glass of wine with this new and engaging writer.
David Grann is a staff writer at The New Yorker and his stories have appeared in many of the best American writing anthologies, as well as the Atlantic, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and the New Republic.

“This was totally different from anything I have ever done; I’d prefer it if all author events were like this. Warren Etheredge is a good interviewer; a couple of glasses of wine help… This was really the best thing I have ever done as an author.”
— Ethan Canin, author of America, America
“I wanted to tell you how enjoyable the last Words & Wine was (Andre Dubus III) for my money, the best I’ve attended. Beautiful evening, beautiful venue, and he was clearly so thrilled to be in the presence of such an appreciative and enthralled audience. And Warren was really ‘on!’ It’s not always easy to be there after a long day of work, but I wouldn’t have missed this for anything. It is a reminder to me of the tremendous benefit this series (and all your efforts) are to this city.”
— Robert Sutherland, attendee
A copy of the book, signed for you by the author after the interview, is included in the $50 ticket cost, in addition to all wines and appetizers.
