Critics and curmudgeons are fond of belittling Hollywood for having no new ideas. Regularly, pundits attack the studios for their systemic insistence on green-lighting sequels, prequels, remakes, re-imaginings and adaptations of books, tv shows and graphic novels. Perhaps the bigger issue, however, is not the supposed unoriginality of over-arching plots and premises — heck, most have long agreed there are only seven basic stories in the world — but rather the execution of the septet. The failure lies in the widespread inability of scriptors to tell these tales in innovative ways.
