Critics and curmudgeons are fond of belittling Hollywood for having no new ideas. Regularly, pundits attack the studios for their systemic insistence on green-lighting sequels, prequels, remakes, re-imaginings and adaptations of books, tv shows and graphic novels. Perhaps the bigger issue, however, is not the supposed unoriginality of over-arching plots and premises — heck, most have long agreed there are only seven basic stories in the world — but rather the execution of the septet. The failure lies in the widespread inability of scriptors to tell these tales in innovative ways. Case in point, the increased reliance on computer software to solve crimes and streamline story-telling. Check out this brilliant montage that encapsulates the infuriating trend of dumbed-down techno-babble in the service of undramatic turning points.
