If Pete Rose has taught us anything, it’s that it is never too early to place your bets. For Pete’s sake and in his spirit — that may deny him the Hall of Fame, but earn me big bucks?!? — I offer a premature prognostication about this year’s Oscar® race for Best Documentary.
There are many worthy candidates: TYSON, FACING ALI, IN A DREAM, EVERY LITTLE STEP and ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL. But there are three that seem like sure-fire nominees. Ondi Timoner‘s may be the best. WE LIVE IN A PUBLIC captures Josh Harris‘ fascinating yet misguided life on (surveillance) camera, and cautions how we may all be slowly imprisoned by our addiction to social media. However, two other titles would seem more likely to score the Academy Award. FOOD, INC. is as topical as AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH and just as exhaustive an overview of a global issue. THE COVE is this year’s MAN ON WIRE, a doc-cut-as-thriller, that exhilarates as it educates. (Click here for my extended interview with THE COVE’s director, Louie Psihoyos.) The story of the annual Japanese slaughter of dolphins unfit for sale to aquariums and water parks is well-paced and emotionally potent. Were the featured Flippers Jewish, I would consider this saga of cetacean genocide a lock.
