Three Dollar Bill Outdoor Cinema Presents This Summer’s Hottest Film Series

Seattle’s most eclectic outdoor movie series returns this summer to Capitol Hill’s Cal Anderson Park with “I Want My 1980” presented by Three Dollar Bill Outdoor Cinema. Following up on the success of “Features from the Black Lagoon” from 2008 and 2007, this year’s slate of fun and campy films all come from 1980, the premiere year of the decade that made sexual power plays, alien encounters, and shameless success all the rage.

July 17 – LITTLE DARLINGS (95 min) It’s a battle of the babes in the ultimate summer camp smackdown, when two girls from opposite sides of the tracks compete to be the first to lose their virginity. 80s teen idols Kristy McNichol and Tatum O’Neal star with forever hunky Matt Dillon (and Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon as a spunky teenager) in this frisky and fun romp through fast cars, food fights, and the end of innocence.

July 31 – FLASH GORDON (111 min) He’ll save every one of us! Playgirl centerfold Sam J. Jones takes on the titular role as the legendary hero of comics and serial films. In this campy, big-budget interpretation, Flash is a football player who finds himself transported to planet Mongo, where he must do battle with Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) to save the universe. Featuring a killer soundtrack by Queen and plenty of hot pants, FLASH GORDON is sci-fi adventure at its sexiest.

Aug 21 – 9 TO 5 (110 min) Long before “the new economy” and bigwig bailouts, this hilarious tale celebrated sticking it to the man. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton star as overworked women slaving away in the depths of corporate hell. When pushed too far by their chauvinistic boss (Dabney Coleman), the women fight back and find out that getting even is a full-time job. With a new stage musical based on the film packing in audiences on Broadway, 9 TO 5 has withstood the test of overtime to become a beloved favorite.

All screenings are free and begin at sunset (around 8:30-9 pm) at the southeast corner of Capitol Hill’s Cal Anderson Park, adjacent to the Bobby Morris Playfields. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase on-site, with proceeds benefiting Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s non-profit efforts to produce and promote queer-friendly film events in the Pacific Northwest.
