If you want to be a doctor, you go to medical school. If you want to be a beautician, you go to Barbizon. If you want to be a screenwriter, you just start typing?
Nope, but that’s how most fools script their failure. They buy Final Draft software, read Robert McKee‘s STORY and begin tapping out approximations of their favorite films, presuming that proper formatting and familiar, tin-eared dialogue are enough to board Hollywood’s gravy train.
Want a better bet? Learn something about the profession first. If you have not or cannot enroll for the Spring session of TheFilmSchool, you must, at least, attend FILM RAP, the speaker series I host in conjunction with Seattle’s populist response to the Sundance Institute. Every Saturday in April, I’ll welcome a successful filmmaker/screenwriter to screen one of her or his best movies, then I’ll engage them in conversation about the craft and commerce of screenwriting. This is one of the very best ways to learn about both aspects of SHOW… BIZ. And, if you’re a member of The Warren Report, these incredible opportunities are FREE.
My past guests include the late Oscar®-winner Sydney Pollack (TOOTSIE), Oscar®-winner Alex Gibney (TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE), Oscar®-nominee Nora Ephron (WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
), Oscar®-winner Ed Zwick (THE LAST SAMURAI
), Oscar®-winner Chris McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS
) and Oscar®-nominee Michael Tolkin (THE PLAYER
).
This month, I’ll introduce aspiring movie-makers and perspiring movie-lovers to Oscar®-winner Jessica Yu (IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL), BAFTA-nominee David Benioff (THE KITE RUNNER
), Gen Art Audience Award winner Harris Goldberg (WITHOUT A PADDLE
) and Independent Spirit Award nominee Robinson Devor (POLICE BEAT
). The four, respectively, will present PROTAGONIST
, 25TH HOUR
, NUMB
and THE WOMAN CHASER and share their trade secrets afterwards in intimate and light-hearted conversation.
Whether you just enjoy going to the movies or dream of seeing your name in the credits, this is the perfect place to learn more about how it’s done. That is, how the best scriptors write the best screen stories.
So, please visit The Warren Report’s Events page now and request your seats to see and hear filmdom’s finest. If you want to emulate their careers, check in before you, prematurely, fade out.
