I don’t care who sits in the director’s chair as long as she or he knows what they’re doing. Apparently, Hollywood is not so open-minded.. nor open-walleted. Opportunities for filmmakers — other than young, white men or wealthy, older, white men — are very limited. Is it racism? Is it sexism? Does it matter? If we limit the scope of who can make movies, don’t we also limit the scope of the stories we’ll see?
On Friday, March 20th, 2009, KUOW’s Sound Focus aired an interview with yours truly about the unfortunate paucity of distaff directors. I name two women whose work I greatly admire and one who may be terribly over-rated… or, just terrible. As always, I urge you to draw your own conclusions and share them right here on this blog post.
