gonzo-2Hunter S. Thompson: genius journalist or crackpot mudslinger?

Watch Oscar®-winner Alex Gibney‘s trippy documentary, GONZO: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Then question what you see, consider what you don’t and… draw your own conclusions. The smartest and funniest comments on this here blog received by Noon on Monday, February 9th, 2009, will win (valuable!) prizes.

For some behind-the-scenes, beyond-the-shenanigans insight, check out my interview with filmmaker Alex Gibney (ENRON: The Smartest Guys In The Room) during which he reveals his unorthodox plan for saving The New York Times and his unique, almost-method approach to shooting Hunter’s life-story. Pass this by and you won’t get high, sucker.

We reviewed this film at SIFF 2008. I enjoyed it and Gibney eschewed the temptation to eulogise Thompson and basically portrayed a pretty accurate picture of the man.

Incidentally, I have some DVDs of Gibney’s excellent documentary about Henry Kissinger for sale. There are some very prescient issues covered given what we have just been through in American foreign policy. There is a good bio of Gibney and further details about the film here: http://film.prostamerika.com/Kissinger.html

    Please contact Warren if interested.

I haven’t gotten around to posting my review of this gem of a documentary on my site yet. I did buy it because I saw it at SIFF 2008 and was genuinely stunned at how accurate it was. Talkin’ bout my ggggeneration. I invited a few of my friends over to view the dvd and watched the fireworks unfold when my uber-conservative right-wing 4-Square bible thumping landlady got in a verbal confrontation with two of my long-haired leaping unknown pals about the manner in which Dr. Thompson decided to depart the planet. Obviously she hadn’t had enough bong-hits for Jesus. It deserves three thumbs up in my book.

This is the review I posted to my website today, finally:

GONZO – The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
No matter how you feel personally about the late Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, there is no argument that can be made in regard to the colorful way he lived his life. The man had a stranglehold on his pursuit of happiness. Yes, he did do massive quantities of every substance known to cause an altered state of reality. He probably pickled every vital organ in his body, but his use of the English language and the articles and books that were produced, were nothing short of cosmically inspired. This is not a remake of “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas” or “Where the Buffalo Roam”, where Hunter and Laszlo, his 300 lb. Samoan lawyer are caricatured by Messer’s Depp and Murray. This is the real deal and a great documentary chronicling his rise and fall from the spotlight and rock star writer status to his ashes being shot out of a cannon in a ceremony that would rival a head of state’s funeral. I’m guessing he would have loved this documentary and especially the music. Had he stuck around for the full eight years of George W’s presidency, there may have been an assassination attempt on both Bush and Cheney. God love you Hunter, no matter where are you are man. Rating: 4 stars and a two thumbed fist salute.
